Fast ways to find and join servers

On our network, after you enter one server, the rest of our servers are typically added to Favorites automatically.

1.1) Direct connect via console (most reliable when the browser is buggy)

Killing Floor is old-school, and the server browser can be moody. Direct connect is the “no drama” option:

  1. Open the in-game console (how to enable it varies by settings).
  2. Use:
open <IP>:<PORT>

If you already joined a server and got kicked, the fastest re-join is often:

reconnect

If you do not know the port, use the exact address shown in the server list above.

What to expect on the first join (especially on community servers)

If a server uses custom content (maps/mutators/configs), your client will download files the first time you join.

How downloads work (what is being downloaded, and where it goes)

On community servers you usually download:

Most of it is cached locally. Over time you can run into two typical “old KF” situations:

If you see mismatch errors, start here:

2) Search by name (works, but less reliable)

Search results depend on filters and server browser quirks. If you can’t find a server by name, use Favorites/IP instead.

3) Use external server lists

Some players prefer external lists like GameTracker. You can also add our servers to Favorites there:

”I can’t see servers” — quick checklist

Deeper troubleshooting (when the checklist is not enough)

Browser is empty or shows only a few servers

Try this order:

  1. Reset filters and refresh a few times.
  2. Sort by players and ping once (it can force a refresh).
  3. Use Favorites or direct console connect.

If you have one working server IP, you do not need the in-game list at all.

Join starts but fails after a long “Connecting…”

FAQ (quick answers)

Is this “official” or “community”?

Our servers are community-run. That usually means more modes, more progression, and custom content, but also first-join downloads and stricter rules.

Why is ping high in the browser?

The in-game browser is not always precise. Use ping as a rough indicator, then test by joining.

Are community servers “safe”?

In practice, “modded/community” usually means custom maps and packages, not anything shady. The most common issue is just old client cache conflicts (mismatch), which is easy to fix.

Why do I get “Package version mismatch”?

It’s usually a cache conflict (old file versions stored by the client). Use the dedicated fix:

How do I reduce re-downloads?

Increase cache retention in KillingFloor.ini (safe tweak) and keep your cache from being purged too quickly:
