Golden Weapons & The Potato ARG

You may see players with a Golden AK47 or Katana. These are relics from the legendary “Potato ARG” event (Portal 2 launch) in 2011.

The Golden AK47

• Unlock Method: Complete the achievement “Golden Potato”.
• The Problem: This achievement required solving a complex Alternate Reality Game (ARG) on the map KFO-Aperture.
• Current Status: The event is officially over, but you can still unlock it on some servers or by following guides to spawn the potato objects in KFO-Aperture.
• Stats: Identical to the regular AK47. It’s just a skin.

Golden Katana / Chainsaw / AA12

These are part of the “Gold Weapon Pack” DLC.

• Method: Buy the DLC on Steam.
• Stats: Same as regular weapons. Pure bling.

Getting the Potato Achievement Today

To get the Golden AK47 today:

1. Play the map KFO-Aperture.
2. You need to find and spend dosh on special “Potato” machines hidden in the map.
3. The final step involves a large explosion and GLaDOS dialogue.
4. Many community servers have scripts to help trigger this easily.

Zero Hour (Dwarfs!? Axe)

Another promo weapon is the Dwarfs!? Axe.

• Unlock: Complete the achievement “Gimli That Axe!” on KF-Dwarfs.
• Effect: It’s a gold battleaxe that knocks enemies back. It functions differently from the Fire Axe.
